Allegiance

The body of work Allegiance examines the relationships among personal, national, and cultural identities.  

 The raised hand with open palm is generally recognized as a gesture of good will.  It is a gesture of greeting and pledging an oath.  It is a motif commonly found on stećci, medieval tombstones from my native Bosnia and Herzegovina.  In "Oath," hands are integrating different identities and the empty spaces in between show a dynamic process of integration.

 The series of photographs "Symbol of One" depicts the relationship between the self and culture.  The hand carrying a unique personal signature engages with different environments.  It stands for its uniqueness, but it is also subsumed by what is around it.
